Official Name: Southeast Michigan Information Security Regional Skills Alliance (RSA)

Date Established: December 2005, with Automation Alley as convener. First year grant funding provided by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG)

Geographical Scope: The counties of Genesee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Shiawassee, Washtenaw and Wayne and the City of Detroit.

Automation Alley's Role: Bring together key leaders in business, education, labor, government and workforce and economic development to meet information security (IS) challenges in Southeast Michigan. Michigan Regional Skills Alliances (MiRSAs) are intended to provide a conduit through which existing workforce development entities can partner to ensure that their services become more coherent, valuable, and accessible.

RSA Objectives: Address the critical need for a skilled and trained IS workforce in the health care and homeland security industries. The evolution of technology and globalization of the economy present significant challenges to organizations in all economic sectors. There will an increasing need for comprehensive IS strategies to protect personal and organizational data, and a trained workforce to develop, implement, and maintain those strategies.

Goals: This RSA will address the following needs:

  • Promote awareness of the need for IS measures as an integral part of doing business.
  • Develop skills in existing and new workers. The RSA will provide a toolkit for organizations to assess IS needs, clarify current skills, and identify needed training.
  • Provide cost-effective IS training to businesses with small numbers of employees. Assist in the development of training paths that are responsive to business needs, informed by state and federal policies regarding IS.
  • Develop career pathway information for IS. This information will inform the career development of current IS professionals; assist in developing on-the-job, apprenticeship, and internship opportunities for the current, emerging, and future workforce; and promote awareness of IS as a career path.
  • Promote organizational and industry-wide process improvement. By promoting awareness of IS needs and providing tools to facilitate the development of a comprehensive IS plan, the RSA adds business value to individual organizations and promotes the growth and stability of industries across the region.
