Discover New Markets in China
If you're seeking to expand your business from Southeast Michigan to the international marketplace, the Automation Alley International Business Center (IBC) is the right place to start. The IBC is committed to helping you establish international business connections through a host of resources that include international trade missions to promising markets.

Why China?
Businesses aspiring to expand their global reach cannot miss this exciting trade mission to China. The 2006 China trade mission will target the following industries:

  • Automotive components (including clean energy technologies): China is the world's second largest auto market after the United States and Japan, and it is the fastest growing market for automotive components and assemblies
  • Machine tools and metalworking equipment
  • Environmental and pollution control equipment: 15 of the top 20 most polluted cities in the world are in China. Government leaders have substantially increased the amount of investment aimed at stemming rampant pollution and environmental degradation resulting from rapid economic growth and development
  • Information technology and software applications

These industries reflect the strengths of Southeast Michigan's economy. Conversely, the regions that we will be visiting on the mission are where the demand for these products and services are the highest in China.

  • With a population estimated at 1.3 billion and growing, China has the world's sixth largest economy with a total gross domestic product (GDP) of approximately $1.65 trillion
  • China is the world's fastest growing economy (industrial production up 17.8 percent from 2005) and on pace to achieving double-digit rates of real growth (10.2%) again this year. Much of this growth is being led by rising domestic demand for foreign-made products and services
  • Domestic consumption in China is estimated to grow 18% annually over the next decade (versus 2% in the US) and will continue to fuel demand for goods from around the world
  • A rapidly emerging middle class population of 100 million today has translated into a $25 billion export market for American products
  • With more than $875 billion in foreign exchange reserves, cash-rich Chinese enterprises are looking to expand in Southeast Michigan to secure advanced technology, managerial know-how, global brands, sourcing, and distribution channels
  • China recently surpassed the United States in foreign direct investment and is the top location worldwide for R&D expansion aimed at creating innovative products and processes for world markets. China has also moved up the value chain to design and engineer products for the more advanced niches of the global economy.

Feedback from Participants of the 2002 Trade Mission to China

"We are expecting at least $1 million in sales as a result of China trade mission and have since quoted over $5 million in work for the clients we met. Our future growth in China would not be possible without Automation Alley. We have hired two new people since this work started and we plan to hire more in upcoming months just to support these activities overseas."

-Don Carbone, President, Managed Programs

"As a direct result of the China trade mission, we signed up four highly qualified distributors. We have generated $500,000 in sales and, as a result of exporting, we have hired 15 more employees."

-Lee King, Vice President of Asian Sales, Numatics Inc.

"There is no way any individual company could leverage this much energy and potential on their own, without the assistance of Automation Alley. As a result of the China trade mission we opened an office in Shanghai in 2002."

-Bob Sullivan, President & CEO, Wireless Source
