CHINA- VIETNAM TRADE MISSION
April 18-26, 2008

Beijing                  Ho Chi Minh City                  Hanoi

As a follow up to a successful China trade mission in 2006, Automation Alley will be returning to China, in addition to an exploratory mission to Asia's economic tiger Vietnam.

Mission highlights include participation in Auto China 2008 in Beijing, China’s leading automotive tradeshow that attracts more than a half-million attendees from around the world. Participants will also visit Asia’s next hotspot, Vietnam.

Why China?

A market of 1.3 billion consumers, including an emerging middle class of 300  million, continues to fuel strong demand for American-made products, services and technologies. This has translated into a $62.5 billion export market for US companies in 2007

The nation’s double-digit GDP (11.5 percent in 2007) will once again exceed 10 percent this year while domestic consumption rates will continue to climb 18 percent yearly over the next decade (versus 2-3 perecent in the U.S.)

It’s not just about low-cost manufacturing anymore. China’s sophisticated, technologically adept, and highly-skilled workforce is quickly moving up the value chain to design, engineer and create innovative products for the global market
With government foreign exchange reserves of nearly $2 trillion, Chinese automotive enterprises are looking to expand in Southeast Michigan to secure advanced technology, managerial know-how, global brands, market access and distribution channels

Why Vietnam?

Vietnam is Asia’s second fastest-growing economy (behind China and ahead of third-place India) with projected rate of GDP growth reaching 9 percent in 2008
The economy is a hybrid between China and India. While still driven by manufacturing, the nation is also boasts a large pool of young IT talent.

A growing wave of high-tech investors (Cisco Systems, Dell, Intel, HP, and Microsoft) are laying the foundation for Vietnam to become Asia’s new mecca for electronics manufacturing, IT and software development.

Vietnam’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2007 has opened the doors to foreign trade and investment while  further privatizing and liberalizing its economy.

“Wayne County Airport Authority’s participation on Automation Alley’s trade mission to China last November 2006 contributed in part to the success of China Southern Airlines recently announcing daily nonstop service between Detroit and Beijing beginning in 2009.  The regional economic impact of this announcement will be $95.6 million annually.”
